Winter can be harsh, even for your vehicle!

Winter sports enthusiasts may not appreciate this reality, but winter presents a challenge, not only for drivers, but also for their cars. In fact, several components of your vehicle can suffer significant damage due to the cold.

Here are the top 10 most vulnerable elements of your vehicle during the winter season:

  1. The battery: In periods of extreme cold, it is well known that batteries discharge more quickly. Having a healthy battery is essential for easier starting.
  2. Motor oil: Imagine molasses exposed to temperatures of -25 degrees Celsius. Trying to mix it by hand would be an impossible task. Using an engine heater can keep the oil at an optimal temperature, improving its viscosity and engine lubrication, which is beneficial for the battery as well.
  3. Fuel pipes: If you leave your gas tank almost empty, ice crystals could form and clog the fuel pipes. Gasoline produces condensation, so be sure to fill up before the cold weather sets in.
  4. Tire pressure: Temperature has a direct impact on tire pressure. Monitor the pressure regularly (many cars have monitors) or consider filling your tires with nitrogen at the start of the season to make them less sensitive to temperature changes.
  5. Moisture in the cabin: Walking in deep snow and lightly shaking your feet before getting into the car can lead to condensation on the carpets, causing fogging of the windows . Using quality rubber mats can avoid this problem, or you can opt for a grandmother’s remedy by placing cat litter in cheesecloth under the passenger seat.
  6. The heating system: Make sure the antifreeze fluid is at the correct level and use the correct fluid to avoid problems throughout the season. If necessary, call a specialist to drain the fluid and replace it.
  7. Belts: Some rubber belts are sensitive to cold. Don’t take any chances and have your entire vehicle inspected, including the belts, as fall approaches.
  8. The multimedia screen: Touch screens are practical, but some can react slowly to cold, or even turn off completely. It is best to let the interior warm up a little before handling them intensively.
  9. Exterior maintenance: Washing the car in freezing weather is not recommended, but if you have a garage, make sure to clean it at least once a month. It is also essential to apply a quality anti-rust treatment before winter, as the salt, gravel and calcium used to de-ice the roads can damage your vehicle.
  10. Monitor range: This recommendation particularly applies to electric cars, which are more sensitive to cold temperatures than their combustion counterparts. In winter, fuel or electricity consumption can increase significantly, up to 40% more for electric cars. Plan your journeys carefully and arrange for recharges if necessary.
